Little Loco Cafe

A good cafe always has the double whammy of a) good coffee and b) good food. Its difficult to find both though, particularly in Brisbane. I am no big fan of the two major Brisbane roasters Merlo and DiBella, they are a bit too dark of a roast for my liking and there are too many terrible baristas around the place making coffee with their beans.

Moving on, we went to Little Loco a month or so back, and since then I have revisited, because this is a cafe that does have the double threat. Coffee here is from Sydney’s Single Origin Roasters, and it is made very well, which ticks all my caffeine boxes. Also, the large size flat white is super large (not pictured).

The cafe is along Merthyr Road in New Farm, in a location that previously hosted Raw PawPaw, and before that, Cafe Bouquiniste. There is a small indoors area with a few 2 person tables, and an outdoors section with bar seating and several larger group tables.

Little Loco’s instagram is full of bright, airy appealing pictures, with a load of dishes that are, of course, very instagrammable. They’ve recently jumped on board the “freakshake” trend, that is, a super sugary milkshake topped off with a load of chocolate or caramel sauce and a doughnut. Personally, I’d rather have my doughnut served on a side plate, but I guess they are wanting to save on the washing up. I know loads of people love this sort of thing.

On the day, we had a couple of dishes from their all-day menu. I devoured the Banoffee hotcake, a thick dense banana and blueberry hotcake adorned with caramel sauce, almonds, and cinnamon banana ricotta. There was a lovely sprinkled trail of chia seeds, which do look good, but you end up getting them stuck in your teeth for the rest of the day.

L had the “Mushrooms”, which was certainly more than just mushies on a plate; in fact it was one of the best mushroom dishes that I have seen on a breakfast menu. Mushroom ragu on top of a couple of small rye slices, was accompanied by a streak of mushroom foam, truffled honey, and pecorino cheese, plus poached eggs.

A great coffee, and a great breakfast (plus picking chia seeds out of teeth gives me something to do on a Saturday), what a great start to the weekend.

Love,
